It was in 1960 that the
Ashford & District Sunday League was first formed, consisting of just one
division made up of 10-12 teams. Newtown Ramblers being the league champions in
its first year.
Of all the clubs that originally formed the league back in
1960, Ashford Dynamo are the only team still in existence today some 50 years
on.
It wasn't until 1968 the league started to expand and added
Division 1. Kent Paper Company being the league champions in Division 1's first
year.
It took a further 3 years before the League started to rapidly
expand and in 1971 Division 2 was added, closely followed by Division 3 the
following year (1972).
It was Chemidus S.S.C who became the first league champions of
Division 2. Chemidus S.S.C are still in existence today albeit under the name of
Ashford Spartans following a name change back in 1984.
Houchin United became the first league champions of Division
3.
The League continued to thrive and so just 6 years on Division
4 was formed in 1978.
